How Music Affects Plant Growth (Part 2)

Do plants have feelings? Can they hear sounds or do they prefer music more? Earlier, it was thought that plants don’t have any feeling and they cannot even feel any pain. Over these years, some of the studies have debated that the plants respond to the sound. The subject is still getting debated hotly in some of the scientific circles. According to the studies, the effect of music on plant growth positively has been seen. If the plant respond to way they get nurtured and holds different sensory perception, then how can they respond to sound waves or vibrations created by the musical sound?

Historical Evidence and Case Studies

In the year 1962, the head of Botany department called as DR. T.C Singh experimented with the effects of music on plant growth. He actually found the plant of balsam grew at rate which accelerated around 20 per cent in height and around 72 per cent in the biomass when they were exposed to music. He also experimented initially with the classical music. Later on, he experienced with the raga music which is improvisation version on set of notes and rhythm and in which the music is played on the harmonium, violin, flute, reena called as Indian instrument. He found much similar effects with them too.

DR. T.C Singh kept on repeating experimenting with the field crops by making use of particular raga type played through the loudspeakers of gramophone. Size of crops even increased to around 25 per cent to 60 per cent, higher than regional average. Through different experiments, he concluded that sound of violin had great effect on plant growth and then experimented on effect of vibration which were caused by the barefoot dancing. After getting the exposure of dancers that performed Bharat Natyam, which is an ancient dance style of India without any musical accompaniment, different flowering plants as Marigold, petunias flowered for around 2 weeks earlier than control.

Research by physiologist & physicist

According to the research by Sir Jagadish Chandra Bose on the effect of music on plant growth, he has spent lifetime in studying and researching different environmental response of plants. He also concluded that they all reacted to attitude with which they get nurtured. He found that the plants around are sensitive enough to all factors in external environment as noise, heat, cold. Bose also documented in one of his research to response in Living & non-living in the year 1902 and also in Nervous mechanism of the plants that got published in the year 1926.

For conducting the research, Bose also created the recorder capable to detect extreme small movements as injured plants quivering. He even invented crescograph, which is a tool for measuring plant growth. From the analysis of effect of the specific circumstances that had on the membranes of plant’s cell, he also hypothesized that they feel and understand pain & affection. When specific to the music, the bird songs or high tones also cause plant for vibrating but not at exact frequency for the calcium resonance, stomata opened after lapse of the time, even though plant kept them closed even under the circumstances as normal.

Testing even showed that leaf fertilizer when applied to plant had more effect on development & growth of plant if the stomata were wide open. This is also logical a bit as the plant absorbed leaf fertilizer through stomata. The combination of leaf fertilizer and the frequency got available for many of the different crops. There are also some of the catches for such a method. In case, if stomata gets forced for remaining opened, plant were unable to control water amount which got lost through the perspiration and it risks more the dehydration. As result, the exposure of plants to the music for around three hours in a day endangered its health.

The use of hoses and other gardening implements

There are also some of the different uses for the garden hoses. The sprinkler hoses are one that is capped at one of the ends and the water gets forced out from little holes along hose. The sprinkler hoses get used for watering the lawns or even for planting new beds.

Similarly, the soaker garden hose get made from porous material which allows the water slowly for seeping into root zones of the new planted beds. The main objective of the flat garden hoses is also the easy storage, for getting longest life out of the hose, whichever you choose. Some of the tips which can help are as,

  • Store the hoses out of the direct sunlight
  • Drain & coil the hose between usage
  • Store the hoses by hanging it
  • Don’t allow the hoses for staying kinked as it can lead to the permanent weak spot on hose
  • Store and drain hoses in garage or even shed through the winter. Never leave the hoses lying out as they can run over or get tripped on.

Similarly, when it comes on understanding the effects of music on plant growth, it appear as it isn’t so much related to sounds of music but more about doing with vibrations that got created by sound waves.

In simplest terms, vibrations also produce the movement in plant cells that stimulates plant for producing more amounts of nutrients. If in case, the plant doesn’t respond to the rock music, it is not because they will like classical better. Moreover, the vibrations which are produced by the loud music as rock creates well great pressure which is not conducive to the plant growth.

The other point of view of the researchers is also that, music really helps plant in growing and they also said that more attention should be laid on the factors of light, soil composition and water. They also suggest that the plants which are exposed to the music thrive as they get the top level of care and even special attention from care takers.

Similarly, one should not even over dose the music as there can be negative effects on some of your favorite plants if frequency or volume gets too high. The effect that cannot be explained is based on opening & closing of stomata. Negative influence of frequency that is too high can also be possibly explained by making use of a technique called as shell resonance.

You must also know that the plants react positively to the classical music and not for heavy metal. The heavy metal is also full of the guitar effects as distortion & overdrive that can certainly be cannot considered as pure tones. At last, there are the effects of music on plant growth positively.
